Pumping Station Automation
Turnkey automation of a pumping station ensures stable pressure, energy savings and protection of pumps against failures. Atlas Scada automates water-supply, pressure-boosting and domestic drinking-water pumping stations in Astana and across Kazakhstan.
A modern station maintains the set pressure through variable-frequency drive control, alternates pumps for even wear and reports any fault to the control room — this reduces failure rates and electricity bills.
Which pumping stations we automate
- Water-supply and pressure-boosting stations (domestic drinking-water).
- Wastewater and drainage stations.
- Pump groups of boiler houses and heat substations.
- Booster stations for residential complexes and commercial facilities.
Pumping station automation functions
- Maintaining the set pressure with a variable-frequency drive (VFD).
- Cascade control and pump alternation for even wear.
- Automatic start of the standby pump when the duty pump fails.
- Protection against dry running, overload and emergency pressure.
- Automatic transfer switch (ATS) for uninterrupted operation.
- Alarm signalling and data transmission to the control room.
System composition
- Pump control cabinet with a controller and variable-frequency drives.
- Pressure, level and flow sensors.
- Starting and protective gear and pump-status monitoring devices.
- OWEN, Siemens or Schneider Electric controllers.
Turnkey project stages
- Survey of the station and collection of source data.
- Design of the automation diagram.
- Assembly of the control cabinet and programming of the controller.
- Installation, commissioning and testing of all operating modes.
- Connection to SCADA monitoring and service.
What you get
- Stable pressure with no spikes or water hammer.
- Energy savings through variable-frequency drive control.
- Pump protection and a longer service life.
- Remote 24/7 station monitoring via the Atlas server.
When a pumping station needs automation
- Pressure spikes and water hammer, complaints about water head.
- Frequent pump breakdowns, motor overheating.
- High power consumption from direct pump starting.
- No redundancy — a pump failure stops the water supply.
- Remote monitoring and diagnostics are needed without constant on-duty staff.
Where the automation saves money
Variable-frequency drive control maintains pressure according to actual water demand and eliminates idle running, reduces inrush currents and mechanical wear. Pump alternation balances their running hours, while early detection of deviations (frequent starts, rising current, falling level) prevents costly failures. As a result, both electricity bills and repair costs go down.
Redundancy and reliability
For uninterrupted operation we provide automatic start of the standby pump when the duty pump fails and an automatic transfer switch (ATS). Protection against dry running and emergency pressure safeguards the equipment, while informative signalling lets staff quickly understand the cause of a fault.
Standards and requirements
We implement solutions in accordance with the Electrical Installation Code (EIC) and water-supply system requirements. For firefighting pumping stations we apply fire-protection standards with mandatory redundancy of pumps and power supply.
Integration with Atlas SCADA monitoring
We connect the station to the Atlas control server: pressure, tank level, pump status and running hours, alarms and trends are available online 24/7. The service engineer sees the problem remotely and responds in advance, often without a site visit.
Timeline and cost
The cost depends on the number and power of the pumps, the presence of variable-frequency drives and redundancy functions; the timeline depends on project readiness and equipment delivery. After the survey we will provide the estimate and schedule; an existing station can be upgraded without a lengthy shutdown.
Why Atlas Scada
- Full cycle: design, panel, programming, commissioning, service.
- Experience in automating pumping stations, including facilities at the Port of Kuryk (2×140 kW).
- Reliable logic with redundancy of pumps and power supply.
Frequently asked questions
Why is variable-frequency drive control better than ordinary pump starting?
A variable-frequency drive smoothly changes the pump speed and maintains precise pressure with no spikes or water hammer, reduces inrush currents and saves electricity, and also extends the equipment's service life.
What is an ATS and why does a pumping station need one?
ATS is an automatic transfer switch: when the main power supply is lost, the load automatically switches to the backup feed. For water-supply and especially firefighting stations this is critical for uninterrupted operation.
Do you automate stations installed by another contractor?
Yes. After a survey we will replace or supplement the automation, add variable-frequency drive control, pump protection and SCADA monitoring.
